The University of West Florida will get a little larger next year. According to discussion at the Oct. 24 Student Government Association meeting, UWF will not only have a new resident hall next year, but will also be taking its first look at creating a football team. UWF Interim President Judy Bense is at the helm of both projects. "She is working on the administration from the campus to introduce them to the idea of hiring a private contractor," said SGA president April Jardine, who revealed the information after a meeting she had with Bense earlier in the week. "She has one contractor in mind, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the Board of Trustees will approve that contractor to be the one to actually build on our campus." While an actual decision probably won't be reached until at least the end of the year, Jardine said, the move is a victory for students living in overcrowded dorms on campus. "That means no more students living in triple occupancy," Jardine said. "That means the goal of increasing enrollment will actually be more likely to happen because we'll be able to house more students on campus. Either way, Bense is dedicated to ensuring that we have another residence hall on this campus that can house students by August, when we start the fall semester of 2009," Jardine said. SGA chief of staff Joshua Finley agreed that a new residence hall would help promote enrollment growth. "I think it is a good start for increasing enrollment within the University," said Finley. "I think Bense is going in the right direction that the University needs to be in the next couple of years." Jardine said she is impressed with the straight-forward approach of the interim president. "She's very, very student oriented," said Jardine. "She wants to make things happen, and she knows how to make things happen. She's here to make UWF number one in this region. That's her goal, and she's going to make it happen before she leaves." Along with the dorm, Jardine revealed that Bense is looking into starting the first football team at UWF, something that has drawn debate from Pensacola and the surrounding areas for quite some time. While not quite as planned-out as the new residence hall, Bense is already trying to get the ball rolling by forming a committee to determine whether or not the endeavor would be financially possible. "Dr. Bense just told me that she's tired of people asking her why we don't have a football team," said Jardine. "She's like, 'We can make it happen,' so she called Quint Studer, who is the chair of the building committee for the Community Maritime Park, and he agreed that the stadium that would be built down there would be able to hold a football team. "So the whole idea of having to build a stadium and a football team and all of that is pretty much out the window because we have one that we're going to be able to use by the time that we have a team," Jardine said. Even though the project is just in the preliminary planning stages, word is spreading through the community. "Since this last week that she's been talking about it, I've been getting phone calls from four or five people asking, 'Is this real?'" said Jardine. "It really is. She really is looking to see if we can have it. It's a really awesome way to grow a University. She assured me that we'd be able to maintain our academic standards and still be able to have a football team." Students are invited to attend the weekly SGA meeting, every Friday in the Commons Auditorium, for the latest on school news and events.
