PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida tennis coach Derrick Racine has announced the men’s and women’s 2013 tennis schedules. Each squad will take on a nationally-ranked opponents throughout the season.
The No. 2 Argonaut men’s team will take on 12 teams ranked in the top 50, 11 of which are in the top 25, in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason rankings. The No. 9 women’s team will take on 10 teams in the top 50, eight of which are in the top 25.
Both teams play a similar schedule and open play against Gulf South Conference foe West Alabama Feb. 6 at home. In its third game of the season, the men’s team will get its first taste of top-10 action against No. 8 Lander Feb. 10 at home.
Both the men and the women’s teams go on the road to play three GSC matches Feb. 15-21 in a trip that concludes GSC play against Valdosta State in Valdosta, Ga. The Blazers’ men’s team is ranked No. 13, starting a four-match stretch in which the Argos play top ten teams back-to-back.
The UWF men will take on No. 6 Rollins, No. 4 Barry and No. 3 Lynn in Valdosta Feb. 23-March 3 before heading to San Diego to take on No. 5 Hawaii Pacific and No. 21 UC San Diego March 9-12.
At the same time on the women’s side, the Argos take on No. 13 Rollins, No. 5 Barry, No. 4 Lynn, No. 6 Hawaii Pacific and No. 32 UC San Diego, with two matches against non-ranked opponents in between.
The Argos’ women’s team concludes the regular season with 11 consecutive matches at home and the men’s team finishes the regular season with 10 straight matches at home.
Notable matches during that time include Concordia N.Y. (No. 14 men, No. 42 women) March 28, BYU-Hawaii (No. 2 women) March 30, Saint Leo (No. 12 men, No. 12 women) April 5, and Abilene Christian (No. 11 men, No. 3 women) April 12.
The Argos will look to play in the Gulf South Conference Championships April 19-21 in Montgomery, Ala. The NCAA South Regional is scheduled April 27-29 and the NCAA Championships are scheduled for May 8-11 in Phoenix.
