PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Florida was unable to overcome a double-digit halftime deficit as the Argonaut women’s basketball team in a 70-61 loss to Alabama-Huntsville Saturday at the UWF Field House.
UWF committed 29 turnovers and the Lady Chargers outshot UWF 11-3 from behind the arc in the Argos second straight loss.
Hanna Vette led the Argo offense for the fifth consecutive contest, scoring 21 points and recording 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Toynetta Johnson also picked up a double-double with 16 points and 10 assists, her first of the season.
In the first half, UWF went up 4-0 in the first two minutes of the game with a pair of layups by Vette. But, UAH came back with an 11-2 run to take the lead 11-6 with 15:16 on the clock.
The Argos came back to tie the game 14-14 after a Jaymie Druding layup with 12:58 on the clock, and the Argos took the lead 15-14 on a free throw from Johnson with 11:12 remaining in the half.
However, turnovers would prove costly, as UAH pulled away to lead by 12, 36-24 at the end of the half. The Lady Chargers scored 14 points off of turnovers in the first half and outshot UWF 6-0 from behind the Arc as UAH made 40 percent of its three-point attempts.
The Argos will be on the road next weekend when UWF travels to West Alabama Jan. 10 to take on the Tigers at 5:30 p.m. before heading to West Georgia to take on the Wolves Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. ET.
