The Argonaut Scholarship Golf Tournament at Scenic Hills Country Club was held Friday, April 5. Teams played to help raise money for the University of West Florida scholarships for incoming athletes.
“The goal is to raise money for scholarships and pay for students to go to college and get a degree,” Brett Berg, UWF assistant athletic director, said. “We want people to not only help pay for the scholarships, but to get a chance to meet the athletes that they are supporting.”
Berg said that the money raised goes to athletes on all 13 varsity teams at UWF. Most of the sports teams were at the tournament to help and support the fundraiser.
“We’re helping out to set up everything before it starts and make sure the tournament goes smoothly,” Autumn Duyn, a sophomore on the volleyball team, said. “We’re filling buckets up with golf balls too.”
“We have the men’s and women’s golf teams to shoot for players for $5 during the tournament too,” Berg said. “Also, the volleyball team, cross country team, and the men’s soccer team are here too.”
“The main idea is to raise as much money as we can,” Spencer Olson, a freshman on the golf team, said. “We’re going to sit on one of the par 5’s and hit drives for $5 or $10.”
First place went to Team Fish House Restaurant.
After the tournament, there was a social with live music and food and a silent auction to raise money. The social was open to UWF alumni, faculty, staff, boosters and fans. The merchandise at the silent auction included gift certificates to local restaurants, UWF clothes, and free nights at hotels on the beach.
Also, the UWF women’s soccer team received their national championship rings at a ceremony afterwards. The team placed first in the 2012 NCAA Division II.
