Argos conquer 4-0 over Delta State

Men’s and women’s soccer teams get 4-0 wins over conference foe Delta State on Senior Day to clinch regular season conference title.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 5 West Florida women’s soccer team extended its winning streak to eight and its unbeaten streak to 27 in a 4-0 win over Delta State in its Senior Day match Sunday afternoon at the UWF Soccer Complex.

Senior Alex Pickrell scored the game-winner after a throw in from senior Chelsea Palmer in the 10th minute for her first goal of the season as the Argonauts concluded October 8-0 having outscored opponents 24-1.

“It’s been a long journey, a long four years and a great four years,” Pickrell said. “I’m just happy for all of us for the win. It was just icing on the cake that I scored.”

All eight UWF (11-0-3, 8-0-1 Gulf South Conference) seniors started the match. In the 30th minute, junior Kelly Andres sent a pass to senior Sashana Campbell who crossed it to Palmer who put it into the net for the second goal of the game.

Palmer has five goals and five assists for 15 points in the last four games.

In the second half, Campbell garnered her second assist of the day when she drove to the side of the DSU box before crossing a pass to junior Julianne Gaubron who scored her second goal of the season with 64:03 on the clock.

Campbell has one goal and four assists in the last four games.

The Argos capped off the scoring at the 72:32 mark when freshman Sara Helgadottir sent a pass to freshman Freyja Vidarsdottir who passed it into the box to freshman Emily Vogler who scored the first goal of her career to put UWF up 4-0.

UWF will play its final regular-season match on the road at West Alabama Nov. 1 at 5 p.m.

PENSACOLA, Fla.  – The University of West Florida men’s soccer team defeated Delta State University Sunday 4-0 in game where the class of 2013 was honored before the game for Senior Day. Eight different Argonauts recorded a point in the match including seniors Jack Salafrio, Fernando Silveira, and Andre Verardi. The Argos are now 11-4-1 on the season. West Florida has now clinched the Gulf South Conference regular season championship after receiving three points for the win for a total of 31 on the season.

West Florida struggled to find the back of the net in the first half and at halftime the score was even at 0-0. It wasn’t until the 49th minute the Argos found their first goal from Miguel Santos. It only took three minutes for the Argos to extend their lead to two after Salafrio found the back of the net from a pass from Santos.

West Florida’s third goal came from freshman Marteinn Urbancic in the 62nd minute and the final fourth goal was scored by Felipe Oliveira. Four different Argos recorded an assist during the match including Silveira who had two. West Florida was lead in points by Santos who recorded three with a goal and an assist in 60 minutes of play.

UWF dominated their opponent and out shot them 23-9 during the match and out shot them 13-2 in second half. However, the Argos were out performed in corner kicks with DSU attempting four to West Florida’s three. Senior Steven Hermosa held the Statesmen scoreless for his third career shutout and improves his season record to 3-0.

West Florida will wrap up the 2013 regular season on the road next weekend when they travel to West Alabama Friday, Nov. 1.
