HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The University of West Florida baseball team rallied in the late innings to down the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers 3-2 Friday afternoon in Huntsville, Ala.
After falling behind early in the game, the Argos cut away at the lead to eventually send it into extra innings. In the tenth, Phillip Ebert delivered the clutch two-out RBI base hit to send home the eventual game winner.
The Chargers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the second inning when Nick Huckaby blasted a solo homerun off the scoreboard in left center to put them out on top.
Argos starter Kevin Johnson settled down and got some run support from the offense to re-take the lead. A Tyler Hastings sacrifice fly in the sixth sent home Lee Huggins from third to tie the ballgame up at one. The next inning Greg Pron shot an RBI single to left to bring home Brandon Brewer for the go-ahead run.
In the eighth for the Chargers, Chris Parkman led off the inning by being hit by the pitch and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. A wild pitch by Johnson brought home Parkman from third to knot the game up at two.
For the Argos in the tenth, Huggins singled and advanced to second on a fielder’s choice. With two down and runners on first and second, Phillip Ebert lined a ball into left field, bringing home Huggins for the eventual game-winning run.
John Church picked up his sixth win of the season, tossing two scoreless innings of relief. This game put the Argos at 7-6 in Gulf South Conference action and in second place behind West Alabama.
The Chargers took the series 2-1 Saturday with a 7-3 win and a 5-3 win. That left the Argos at 27-19 on the season and 7-8 in GSC play.
