Whether looking for some home cooking like Mom used to make, craving a deli sandwich or wrap or desiring a catered spread, Goat Lips Deli and Dinner House will seal the deal with its reasonably priced menu.

Nestled on Copter Road just east of Davis Highway outside of a former Navy airfield, it is housed in an old building as sturdy as the oaks that stand guard nearby.

I practically danced with delight as I was greeted and directed to my table. Bob Marley seeped into my ears as the different aromas promised me an alluring selection.

I instantly felt comfortable with the décor of famous musicians and actors, team pennants and movie posters blanketing the walls. The waiter and patrons added to my comfort as they eagerly welcomed me.

I was encouraged to try the pot roast, which could not have been more tasty, with garlic mashed potatoes, green beans and a yummy roll rounding out the meal.

It was a good choice, overall. Goat Lips is versatile, offering a deli menu of salads, homemade soups and sandwiches for the lunch crowd.

For dinner, there’s also a menu with good old-fashioned cooking like pot roast, meatloaf and such. While munching, I asked the waiter to explain the rather unique name to me.

The other patrons nodded and chuckled as he told me about the owner’s friend, an Episcopal priest, who had the habit of repeating an old southern saying: “ Don’t worry! It’s going to come together like Goat Lips.”

Liking the idea behind the expression (plus being dared to use it), the owner, Larry Cowan, realized the restaurant’s name had been born.

I want to come back on a weekend with friends to sample the domestic and imported beer and wine selection. Plus, there are appetizers beckoning me to try them next time. If coming with a large group, no worries, there is plenty of extra room on the patio and decks as well.

Goat Lips Deli & Dinner House is located at 2811 Copter Road in Pensacola. It’s open Monday – Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Go to goatlipsdeli.com to download a delivery menu.
