The New Yorker Deli is a small building on Cervantes Street, with no more than seven parking spaces.
I was nervous pulling into the lot, but once inside I was immediately greeted by the staff and seated comfortably at a table with my friends.
Our waiter was at the table instantly with a smile on his face and a very friendly demeanor. He gave us some recommendations and answered all of our questions with pleasure. He spoke with us very conversationally and openly.
Honestly, he was one of the best servers I have ever had. The atmosphere was very warm and cozy.
There was a grand total of 11 tables in the diner. The front counter had fresh desserts, with a lot of their food for sale by the pound, including salads and side items.
The floor was classic black-and-white checkerboard pattern, and the walls were covered with New York City memorabilia. The restaurant was very clean and smelled like fresh bread.
There were a few local couples dining and talking casually about the weather. All of the waiters were wearing “I Love New Yorker Deli” T-shirts and clearly enjoying their jobs.
The menu options were vast and classic pizzeria style, including hot and cold subs and sandwiches, calzones, stromboli, salads, lasagna, spaghetti, soups, pastas and pizza. The average price for a meal is about $6.
My friend and I ordered a large bowl of cream-of-potato soup to split, and the server kindly brought us two separate cups. The soup was definitely homemade: It was thick, warm and very delicious — the perfect start to dinner on a cold and rainy evening.
Next we ordered the classic New Yorker cheese pizza to share. It was absolutely terrific. The dough was crisp, the sauce was, again, homemade and the whole thing was melt-in-your-mouth good.
The sweet tea was perfect — not too sweet, and fresh-brewed. Overall, the food was wonderful.
I would highly recommend The New Yorker Deli because of its relaxed atmosphere, great food and pleasant service. It is located at 3001 E. Cervantes St. and is open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. until 9 p.m.
