Pensacola Little Theatre will hold open auditions March 8 and 9 at 7 p.m. for its production of “12 Angry Jurors,” presented by the law office of John F. Asmar.
The auditions will be held at the theater, located inside the Pensacola Cultural Center at 400 S. Jefferson St. in downtown Pensacola.
Auriette Lindsey, marketing and public relations director for PLT, said she encouraged anyone in the community to audition. No previous acting experience is necessary, but performers must be between the ages of 18 and 80 to audition.
Director Lawrence Gamell Jr. is looking for various personality types to portray the 12 jurors in the play, Lindsey said. The characters’ personalities range from timid and thoughtful to bull-headed and arrogant.
“They’re going to cast whoever they think is going to be right for the personality type,” she said. “It’s a wide variety of personalities, so they’re going to tailor the script to this particular cast.”
Actors who audition will be asked to do cold readings of scenes from the script. Copies of the script will be available in the main office of the theater for anyone who wants to read over it before the auditions, but they have to remain in the building, Lindsey said. Information about the characters can also be found online at pensacolalittletheatre.com.
The play, an adaptation of “Twelve Angry Men” by Reginald Rose, focuses on 12 jurors who are deciding the fate of a young man accused of murdering his father. At the beginning of the story, most of the jurors have decided on a guilty verdict without a second thought. One juror disagrees, however, and argues that the decision requires deeper consideration.
“His ‘not guilty’ vote leads to intense and personal debate about the evidence and testimony presented,” Lindsey said in a PLT press release.
Gamell has a strong background in theater. He has appeared in more than 137 plays and productions, including the lead in the play “Twelve Angry Men” at the off-Broadway Theatre in Las Vegas.
“12 Angry Jurors” will be Gamell’s first production at PLT. He said he would be looking for actors who were “flexible” in their skills, such as speaking with various accents.
“I’m going to do my best to bring out the best performances of the actors,” Gamell said.
“12 Angry Jurors” will be performed April 22 to 24 and April 30 to May 2, at PLT. It is a Studio 400 Production, meaning it may contain adult language and situations.
