In our modern society we feel relatively safe from external threats. There is always the threat of war and terrorist attacks, but is the Department of Homeland Security doing enough to protect us from all possible threats?
As of right now, the United States government has no publicly known plans to combat an outbreak of the walking dead. We’ve been lucky up to this point that no severe zombie outbreak has ever been recorded in U.S. history. That doesn’t mean it can’t happen.
Why should we prepare for a zombie outbreak? Most outbreaks start small, usually when one zombie bites an uninfected person. That person becomes a zombie, and he or she bites two more people. This continues until a gigantic, staggering horde is beating down your door.
Since these outbreaks start small, a government body, especially one with the full resources of our government, could end this threat with quick and efficient force.
One would be unrealistic to expect no zombies to crop up. No amount of government planning or military tactics could protect every American from the undead. Outbreaks cause casualties. However, with proper planning, the deaths caused from these disasters could be cut down to a very acceptable level.
The first step to any zombie-protection plan would be to inform all citizens of the signs of outbreaks. As of right now, only a small number of the population has taken the time to read the proper literature regarding how to identify the undead.
The second step would be having means of a quick response. When an outbreak happens, there won’t be time to wait for the National Guard to be deployed. A few trained professionals in all populated areas could be trained to keep watch just as any law enforcement officer or public servant would.
The final step would be to plan for the worst. How would the United States respond to an outbreak on the scale of millions? We can’t set up programs all over the world, but we can watch our own borders.
If a civilian can plan for such an eventuality as an outbreak of the walking dead, then surely our government could take some initiative as well. We’re American taxpayers after all, and we deserve to feel safe from threats within our own borders.
