Paschvoss wins SGA chair
After a tight race for University of West Florida Student Government Association Academic Chair during annual elections April 8-9, a runoff election ending April 16 found Nicholas Paschvoss to fill the position for the coming year. Paschvoss barely claimed the title after receiving 142 votes in the runoff election, while his opponent, Chris Henseler, received 141 votes.
ILWU to strike
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union has called for a strike on May 1, 2008, against the Iraq War. Although the labor strike will only last one day, members of the ILWU said they hope the strike will educate others on the anti-war movement.
Cavanaugh rallies for booze-free sports TV
University of West Florida President John Cavanaugh is among more than 100 college presidents and athletic directors who have called on the National Collegiate Athletic Association to end prominent beer ads during televised NCAA basketball tournaments. University presidents urged the NCAA's Division I Board of Directors and Executive Committee to formally review its policies on alcohol advertising, which were last examined in 2005.
UWF awards student leadership
The University of West Florida Division of Student Affairs announced the winners of the 20th Annual Student Leadership and Service Awards at the annual banquet April 13. Awards were presented to outstanding student leaders, student organization advisors and registered student organizations that have stood out in overall service and leadership on the UWF campus.
