Bense is awarded for the creation of UWF’s archaeology program
University of West Florida President Judy Bense was awarded the J.C. Harrington medal by the Society for Historical Archaeology on Jan. 8. The medal, the society’s highest honor, was awarded to Bense because of her lifetime contributions to the educational spectrum of the archaeology discipline, Elizabeth Benchley, director of the UWF Archeology Institute, said.

Forensics Team Takes First The University of West Florida Forensics Team won the 2010 State Championship in Debate at the Florida Intercollegiate Forensics Association State Championship at Florida Atlantic University. The team had been preparing since September for the competition, honing their skills in areas such as argumentation and eloquence.
In keeping up with Florida Archaeology Month, Pensacola has been focused on informing the public about the city’s history through various lectures during March. Coordinated by the Florida Anthropological Society, Florida Archaeology Month is held every March in order to encourage Floridians to learn about the archaeology and history of the state and to preserve its culture and heritage.
On March 2, Facebook’s popularity grew to another level when President Obama used it to promote his efforts to make college education more affordable. The president’s proposal to change the cost of college education would be reached through the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act.
The University of West Florida will not build its maritime museum at the community maritime park for at least three to five years. The UWF administration told the Community Maritime Park Associates board that at this time it doesn’t feel that it would be able to provide the funds necessary to complete the construction process.

A non-profit organization from Washington ranks UWF against other schools
The University of West Florida received a grade of B from the American Council for Trustees and Alumni for requiring that its students take only four out of seven areas of general course work. ACTA, a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., followed the academic catalogs of 170 universities to learn if the schools offered broad courses in the areas of composition, literature, mathematics, natural sciences, economics, foreign language and history.
ACLU argues there are alternatives to current procedure
The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida argued that the coroner’s inquest system no longer works at a town hall meeting on Feb. 23. The meeting, co-sponsored by the Movement for Change, discussed the coroner’s inquest into Victor Steen's death.
