UAH comeback spoils sweep for Argos

The University of West Florida baseball team took two out of three games from the University of Alabama-Huntsville. UWF improved their record to 23-18, 10-5 in the Gulf South Conference.

The Argonauts swept Saturday's doubleheader 4-1 in game one and 8-4 in game two.

UWF got on top first with a run on an RBI single by senior first baseman Ryan Fillingim in game one.

UAH tied the game in the top of the second, and the game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth inning.

Senior third baseman Patrick Cottrell hit a RBI single to put UWF on top 2-1.

The Argos opened the lead to 4-1 with two runs in the seventh.

Freshman right fielder Peter Antoske hit a home run to left field to score the first run. Cottrell hit a double to right center. Fillingim hit a single, and senior left fielder Rhett Summerford was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sophomore second baseman Owen Davis walked to score the final run.

Cottrell went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Antoske went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs and Fillingim went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Junior starter Bryan Lee went 7.1 innings, giving up one run on eight hits while striking out nine and walking one for his seventh win of the season. Junior reliever Adam Espinola finished the game, going 1.2 innings and striking out two for his third save.

UWF got on the board early in game two with a run in the bottom of the first.

Senior shortstop Hunter Vick started the inning with a single and Antoske followed with a single. Cottrell hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Vick.

The Argos added a run in the second on an RBI double by senior center fielder Jarret Dring.

UWF picked up two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Summerford hit a double down the left field line to start the inning. Davis reached on a throwing error, scoring Summerford. Sophomore catcher Casey Gierke walked, and Vick singled. Antoske walked, and Gierke scored on a passed ball.

UAH tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth, but the Argos came back to take the lead in the bottom of the inning with four runs of their own.

Senior Blake Leger hit a single and sophomore Josh Mayfield came in to pinch run. Junior designated hitter Matt Wood hit a single up the middle and Davis hit a single to left, scoring Mayfield. Gierke singled to center field to score Wood. Dring hit a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Davis scored on the play. Vick was hit by a pitch and Gierke scored on a single by Antoske.

Senior starter Aaron Archambeau pitched 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out four. Espinola picked up his third win of the season, going 2.1 innings with two hits, a walk and a strikeout.

Summerford went 2-for-3 with two runs, and Davis went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Antoske went 2-for-3 and added an RBI.

UAH stole the victory from UWF in a 5-4 ninth inning come-from-behind win in game three of the series.

The Argos took a two-run lead in the bottom of the second inning. Fillingim and Wood singled to start the drive. Summerford grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Fillingim. Gierke hit a double to left field to score Wood.

UAH responded with two runs in the top of the third to tie the game at 2-2.

The score was 3-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning when UWF picked up a run to tie the game on an RBI single by Antoske.

The Argos took the lead in the bottom of the seventh with a run on an RBI double to right field by Fillingim.

UAH got two runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead and win the game.

Fillingim went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Antoske went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Gierke went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

Sophomore starter Todd Androsko pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on nine hits, while walking five and striking out nine. Junior reliever Phil Stillwell walked three batters in two-thirds of an inning. Junior reliever Scott Daugherty went 1.1 innings and gave up two runs on one hit while striking out three and walking one.

UWF travels to Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn., for a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon and the final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
