With Election Day two months away, the Nu Kappa Chapter of Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority rushed to do its part to get everyone
registered and informed by hosting a meet and greet.
According to a pamphlet given to prospective voters by the
sorority, the organization's goal is to “sponsor programs
that focus on economic empowerment, educational development,
political and legal awareness, health issues and international
involvement.”
"Some programs that our sorority has participated in include the
Manna Food Drive and the Smoke Gainer Celebrity Weekend," said
Marie Watkins, Nu Kappa Chapter’s president. The sorority
also works with the Ronald McDonald House by collecting and
distributing gifts in December.
The sorority has 11 active members who volunteer and serve the
University of West Florida and Pensacola.
“Getting people registered to vote is another service the
sorority is doing for the community,” said Danielle Salley, a
sophomore nursing major.
Sorority members dressed in their colors, crimson and cream, to
greet individuals and get them to register.
“Most people say that they are registered or are not ready to
register to vote,” Watkins said. “We want to get as
many registered as possible because every vote counts.”
Five people, including Salley, registered to vote at the meet and
greet.
“The sorority should be more vocal and provide more
information on the issues,” said Ashley Williams, a sophomore
elementary education major.
Voting is every American citizen’s right, and registering to
vote is the first step in the voting process.
“It is going to affect you,” Watkins said of the
election.
Election Day is Nov. 2. Voter registration forms are available at
the Nautilus Card Office, the University Commons, Student Affairs
Building, the Advising Center and the Registrar's Office.
