The University of West Florida's men threatened to blow out NAIA's Thomas University with two goals in the first minute-and-thirty seconds. However, Thomas settled down, and the Argos held back the Nighthawks for the 2-1 victory in Sunday's home opener.
Twenty-two seconds into the game Keith Savage penetrated the Thomas defense to score game's opening goal. A minute-and-seven seconds later Nolan Intermoia scored what turned out to be the game winner, assisted by Ryan Teague. That was the last of the UWF scoring as the Nighthawks defense tightened up. With 3:40 left to play in the first half, Bright Ayrakwa put Thomas on the board on a long-range one-touch shot from Srdjan Smileski.
The Argos out shot Thomas 29-10, and were 10-6 for shots on goal. Savage rattled off six shots, while Eduardo Oliviera remained busy with five shots. West Florida keeper Matt Gascoigne collected five saves. Thomas keeper Roland Mott pulled in eight saves.
The Argonaut's first win of the season improves their record to 1-0-1. Thomas slips to 0-2-1.
West Florida plays at Rollins College next Friday.
