Men Tie Tampa

West Florida returned to the soccer fields Friday, Aug. 26 after Hurricane Ivan prematurely ended their 2004 campaign after three matches.

Ninety minutes of regulation did not determine a winner, and the Argonauts and Spartans remained deadlocked after 20 minutes of overtime as the teams finished in a 1-1 tie. After losing their first eight meetings to Tampa, West Florida is now 1-0-1 in their last two matches against the Spartans. Both teams are 0-0-1.

Tampa started the scoring early when Luke Enna's first shot of the season eluded Argonaut goalkeeper Matt Gascoigne at the 8:15 mark in the first half to give Tampa a 1-0 advantage. West Florida responded at 36:27 when Keith Savage, the 2003 GSC Freshman of the Year, netted his first goal of the season to tie the match at 1-1.

West Florida threatened in the second half when Jack Luker's header hit the crossbar, and a shot by Jason Mrcozkowski seven minutes later, also banged off the crossbar. In the overtime session, West Florida got off one shot in both the first and second overtime periods, but Tampa goalkeeper Colby West made the saves. West Florida out shot Tampa, 13-9, for the game, but each team only totaled four shots on goal.

UWF was a 3-1 winner over St. Leo in Sunday's game.

Women open with tie and win

TAMPA, FLA.: On a wet evening in the Tampa Bay Area, West Florida was back on the soccer fields Friday night for the first time since Sept. 12, 2004. The Argonauts and Tampa battled for 90 regulation minutes and 20 overtime minutes. But in the end, neither team was able to score as both teams finished with a 0-0 tie. It was the Argonauts first 0-0 tie since Oct. 25, 2002 against Montevallo. Both West Florida and Tampa begin the season with 0-0-1 records.

West Florida was held to only six shots over 110 minutes, but only two shots were on goal: One by Brianna Oeser midway through the second period, and another by Audia Sullivan in the first overtime. Argonaut goalkeeper Klara Vrbova made seven saves to help preserve the tie. With 11 seconds remaining in regulation, Vrbova's save on a shot by Tampa's Courtney Evans helped send the game into overtime.

Sunday's match against St Leo was rained out. No makeup has been scheduled.

Friday night's home game against Thomas University has been rescheduled for Sunday Sept. 4 at 3 p.m.
