A new year calls for new faces

UWF welcomed a host of new faculty members for 2005-2006. Each of the three colleges gained new faculty members, with the College of Arts and Sciences receiving 16, the most.

 

The history department acquired two associate professors, Matt Clavin and William S. Belko. Clavin will teach a variety of courses on early America, and Belko will teach graduate and upper-

level courses on historic preservation and early America.

 

Belko arrived in Pensacola from Michigan. His first book, "Jackson's Apostate: Duff Green and the Making of Jacksonian America,  1815-1850," will be published in the spring of 2006.

 

In addition, Belko has had many articles published. Those include a two-piece article that won the 2003-2004 Missouri Historical Review's Best Article Award, as well as the 47th Annual Missouri Conference on History Best Article Award.

 

Clavin, from Baltimore, is near completion of his dissertation, "Men of Color, to Arms! Remembering Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution in the American Civil War," at American University in Washington.

 

He will also have his article "Race, Revolution, and the Sublime: The Gothicization of the Haitian Revolution and the New Republic and Atlantic World," published in  the  journal  "Early American Studies."  Clavin also has  published a series of reference articles, book reviews, and a newspaper articles.

 

The electrical and computer engineering department gained two associate professors, Andreas Fuchs and Bassam R. Shaer. Fuchs joins UWF from Prattsville, NY. Fuchs received a  Ph.D. in

electrical engineering,  and his specializations include electric circuits, signals and systems, control systems, digital systems, and electronics. Fuchs recently had "On Weak Relative Degree and the McGhee Transformations" published.

 

Shaer also earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and comes to the Gulf Coast from Duluth, Minn . His specializations include: computers, digital signal processing, power, control, electronics, communications, and electromagnetics. Shaer recently had "An Automated Algorithm for Partitioning Sequential VLSSI Circuits" published.

 

The department of environmental studies welcomed two new associate professors,  Matthew Schwartz and John Waldron.  In the fall, Schwartz will teach hydrology, and Waldron will teach a variety of environmental courses.

 

Schwartz graduated from the University of Delaware in 2002 with a doctorate in marine studies and a B.A. in geology. He completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Edinborough School of Geosciences in Scotland. Schwartz has been published many times, most recently with "Coastal Nutrient Inputs from Groundwater" in an online publication.

 

Waldron will be teaching at the Fort Walton Beach campus. He comes to  UWF  after working with the U.S. Forest Service  in Asheville, N.C. He received a doctorate from Texas A&M in 2002 and has been published dozens of times. His most recent publication was the article "Cigmoid Wave Transfer at Alpine Tree Lines" in the Geographika Annelar Series.

 

The math and statistics department gained an associate  professor, Jaromy Kuhl. He recently obtained a Ph.D. in math from the University of Mississippi. Kuhl also co-authored a research paper,  "On a Conjecture of Haggkvist on Completing Latin Squares," published in a math journal, and he currently has two further papers under review.

 

The music department has a new professor, Kyle Marrero, who will also be the chair of the department.  Marrero was the assistant professor of voice at Louisiana State University from 1994 and has more than 20 years of operatic experience. He is a renowned operatic producer and director with numerous productions under his belt. As the artistic director of the Pensacola Opera Production, he produced 2005's "Madam Butterfly."

 

The theater department gained a new professor, Charles Houghton. He holds an M.F.A. from Temple University and a B.A. from the University of San Diego.  Previously, Houghton was the head of design at the University of North Colorado, where he taught lighting design and stage management.

 

In addition to teaching and supervising the design program, he was the assistant dean of the College of Performing and Visual Arts. Houghton has designed lighting for theater, musical theater, opera, modern dance and ballet.  His recent designs include "Cabaret" and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" for Monterey Peninsula College.

 

The art department welcomed two new professors, Barbara Larson and Christina Nugyn Hung. Larson has a Ph.D. from New York University and comes to UWF from Syracuse University. She has worked as the senior museum educator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

 

In 2004 Larson received a prestigious grant from the College Arts Association to study "Rodin's Gates of Hell" in Paris. Larson teaches 19th century and modern art history.

 

Hung obtained an M.F.A. from the University of Maryland and has studied at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Hung joined UWF from the University of Virginia, where she specialized in digital media.

 

Hung belongs to SubRosa, a celebrated group of female artists who specialize in performance video presentations. Recently she was asked to participate in Sardinia, Italy's annual cultural festival, where she presented "Handmade in China." Hung is teaching a variety of advanced digital media courses.

 

The College of Professional Studies has two new reading professors, Laura Staal and Jennifer Bailey. Bailey graduated from Stetson University with a B.A. in elementary education. After teaching in Orlando for five years, she received an M.Ed. and a Ph.D. in reading instruction from the University of Southern Mississippi.

 

Bailey had her qualitative study for her dissertation, "Metacognition Strategies: A Case Study of Two First Grade Students Using the Accelerated Literacy Learning Program," published.  She will be the new assistant professor of literacy education at the Fort Walton Beach campus.

 

The College of Business acquired four new professors. The management/MIS department will welcome Julie Anne Stuart , who  will teach industrial engineering. She came to UWF from Purdue University, where she taught since 2000.

 

Stuart had her paper "Repackaging: An Opportunity for Environmentally Conscious Manufacturers," published in the "International Journal of Environmentally Conscious Design and Manufacturing" in 2004. The paper is just one of her numerous publications.

 

Doug Waggle joined the department of accounting and finance. Waggle taught at the Campbell School, Berry College of Business in Georgia since 1994. He has been published quite frequently over the years, including the article "Home-ownership and the Decision to Invest in REITs" in the  "Journal of Real Estate Portfolio Management" in 2004.

 

The department of marketing and economics is pleased to have gained two new associate professors, Scott Keller and Michael Weber. Before teaching at UWF, Keller taught at one of the leading logistics schools in the world, the University of Michigan. He obtained a Ph.D. in marketing and logistics from the University of Arkansas.  Keller will be bringing two new business courses to UWF, supply chain logistics management and strategic transportation management. He has published multiple journal articles. Recently Keller co-authored "Differentiating the Suppliers of Job Products to Union and Non-Union Frontline Distribution Center Employees" for the "Transportation Journal."

 

Weber earned a Ph.D. in business at Louisiana State University in 1998. He taught at the University of Miami from 2002 until UWF hired him . He will be teaching a variety of marketing courses, including a consumer behavior course in the fall semester. Weber has been published frequently. His most recent work was his article "Domestic Cross-Cultural Marketing and Creating Effective Strategies" for Atomic Dog Publications.
