The final score of the game between the University of West Florida Argonauts and the Eckerd College Tritons was not indicative of how close the match-up really was. The Argos scored three goals in 66 seconds of play during the game's final five minutes for the much-needed 4-0 victory on a steamy Sunday afternoon.
Both defenses settled down after the Argo's first goal, at the 9:14 mark of the first half.
It was not until the 86th minute, late in the second half, when the Argos took control of the game with a goal by Zaheer Bell, assisted by Jay Mainville. Eighteen seconds later Graham Ervin dribbled through the Triton defense and tapped home UWF's third goal. West Florida scored once again on a Brian Puckett goal, assisted by Ervin.
Outshooting Eckerd 17-7 and 6-4 in shots-on-goal, West Florida controlled most of the game. Argos keeper Matt Gascoigne collected four saves and earned his first shutout of the season.
West Florida continued their success over Sunshine State Conference rival Eckerd by improving their record against the Tritons to 9-2-0.
"We came out with a lot of energy and the players were really unselfish," said head coach Bill Elliott. "It's hard to constantly run in this heat for each other, but they did, even the players we brought off the bench. It was just a fantastic team effort."
The Argos improved their overall record to 3-2-1, while Eckerd dropped to 2-2-2.
Keith Savage scored three second half goals as West Florida used a four-goal second half to defeat NAIA foe Spring Hill College, 4-1, Friday, Sept. 16 at the UWF Soccer Complex. With the win, the Argonauts record now stands at 2-2-1. Spring Hill falls to 1-3. West Florida improved their all-time record against Spring Hill to 15-0-1.
Spring Hill opened the scoring in the 34th minute of the first half.
West Florida responded in the second half with their biggest offensive half of the season. West Florida out shot Spring Hill, 35-11, and held a 14-6 advantage in shots on goal. Gascoigne collected five saves for his second victory of the season.
West Florida will begin Gulf South Conference action Friday, Sept 23 when they visit Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Ark. The Argos will continue on to Christian Brothers University for a Sunday, Sept 25 game before returning home.
