Playing their first Division I opponent since Middle Tennessee State on Oct. 17, 1999, the Argonauts blanked Alabama State 8-0 Sunday afternoon at the UWF soccer complex to remain undefeated at 6-0-1.
Mauricia Nicholson and Patricia Toledo each totaled five points as West Florida scored four goals in each half. West Florida scored their first two goals 42 seconds apart with an unassisted goal by Nicholson and a Marcela Franco goal assisted by Toledo. Toledo would get her second assist of the first half on a Brandi Adams goal, and Nicholson would return the favor as she assisted Toledo's sixth goal of the season.
In the second half, Nicholson scored her second goal of the match, with a feed from an Audia Sullivan. Brianna Oeser tallied her 41st career goal, with another assist by Toledo, to pull within one goal of the UWF record. Sheka Codner added her second goal of the season when she dribbled into the box and through defense, and Sarah Hughes posted her first career Argonaut goal off a corner kick from Shante Codner.
While the offense put up at least eight goals for the second time this season, the defense pitched their fifth shutout of the season. Alabama State did not record their first shot of the match until the 83rd minute. Argo's keeper Klara Vrbova played the first 60 minutes, but she did not need to make any saves. Sharon Kerby collected one save in her 30 minutes of action.
"We had a tough three weeks playing the Sun Shine Conference so it is good to play an opponent like this although they are Division I, said head coach Joe Bartlinski. "We need a game like this to work on our system and take a step back so that when we go into conference play this week we are prepared a little bit better. We just have to execute what we have been working on in practice."
West Florida completes their three-match home stand by hosting NAIA foe Thomas University Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7:00 pm They will begin conference play on the road, at Ouchita Baptist University Friday, Sept 23 and Christian Brothers University on Sunday, Sept 25.
