Michael Padilla broke his own school record in the 8,000-meter run by 12 seconds, leading the University of West Florida to a first-place finish Saturday at the Blazer Classic, hosted by Valdosta State University. Argonaut runners took the top four places to earn a victory with 16 points. Valdosta State followed with 54 and Albany State had 118.
Padilla won the race with a time of 24:40 to beat his old record, which he set at the 2004 Disney World Classic with a time of 24:52. Caleb Carmichael finished second with a personal best of 25.27. Sam Ishee followed in third place, finishing in 25:42, while Brian Miller rounded out the Argonaut top four with time of 25:57.
Three other UWF men's runners earned top 10 finishes. Brian Gowin crossed the finish line in sixth place with a time of 25:59. Danny Bauer's time of 26:37 was good for ninth, while teammate Craig Henry finished behind Bauer in 10th place with a time of 26:39.

Women win again
Proving again that having the first-place winner doesn't always lead to a team victory, the University of West Florida women's cross country team posted a first-place finish at the Blazer Classic Saturday in Valdosta, Ga.
Six of the top 10 finishes belonged to Argonaut harriers as West Florida placed first with 25 points, followed by Valdosta State, 39 (2nd); Albany State, 85 (3rd); and Georgia Southwestern, 125 (4th).
After Valdosta State's Melissa Daugherty crossed the finish line first, Dawn Kane finished second with a personal best of 19:37.19. Argonaut runners Margaret Harter and Nicole Stanley finished hundredths of a second behind Kane. Harter finished third in 19:37.54, while Stanley placed fourth with a time of 19:37.91. Diana Sitar earned a seventh place finish with a time of 20.01, and Kim Gallagher's time of 20:10 was good for ninth place. Lindsey Failing finished in 10th place with a time of 20:48.
Other Argonaut finishers were Frency Ramos, 21:01 (12th); Kim Burgess, 21:22 (15th); Emily McHugh, 22:00 (16th); and Rebecca Thielmann, 22:55 (22nd).
After their successful run in Valdosta, the Argonauts are preparing for the South Pre-Regional on Saturday in Dade City, Fla. The NCAA Division II South Region Championships is set for Nov. 5 on the same course.
