Music and the smells of funnel cakes, turkey legs, and cannabis filled the air last weekend in Mobile, Ala., at the 11th annual BayFest music festival.
Widespread Panic, a Grateful Dead/Allman Brothers-inspired jam band from Athens, Ga., headlined Friday night with a customary two-set/encore performance that lasted more than three hours.
Other acts to perform at the three-day music festival included B.B. King, Trapt, Saliva, Theory of a Deadman and American Idol runner-up Bo Bice.
Widespread Panic, who BayFest described on its Web site as a "road warrior band" for its nonstop touring, played 20 songs from its catalog of more than 350. Some of the well-known songs the band played include "Conrad," "Love Tractor" and "Sometimes," which the band played during its encore.
Staying true to form, the band played a set list that it never has used before. For a complete set list of Widespread Panic's BayFest show or any of its shows dating back to 1985, go to www.everydaycompanion.com.
Bo Bice headlined Saturday night, performing after hard-rock bands Dark New Day and Top of the Orange on the Pepsi Stage.
Several hundred Bice fans flooded the area in front of the stage. Many fans started staking out their spots as early as 2 p.m. for the 10:45 p.m. Bice show.
Minor conflicts arose between Bo Bice fans and Dark New Day/Top of the Orange fans. Fans of the hard-rock bands tried to get closer to the stage by cutting in front of Bice fans who were sitting in their lawn chairs.
Some Bice fans got upset, saying they had waited there longer and now could not see the stage. No arrests were made in any of the incidents, but many people said the scheduling could have been better.
Trapt headlined Sunday night, rocking BayFest with their hits "Headstrong" and "Still Frame," among others. Saliva opened for Trapt, playing songs from their recent "Survival of the Sickest" album and their debut, "Back Into Your System."
Also performing Sunday night was legendary blues guitarist B.B. King. He captivated the BayFest crowd with his many blues standards, including "Three O'Clock Blues" and "Everyday I Have the Blues."
