Everyone has a secret talent they're just dying to show off. For some, it's juggling. Yet others may display their skills on the dance floor.
On Oct. 27, the University of West Florida's student body will have a chance to show off their skills at the Campus Activities Board Center Stage Division's 16th annual Talent Show for a piece of a $1,000 cash prize.
Students can pick up applications through Oct. 24. The applications are at the front service desk in the UWF Commons or at the UWF Student Activities office. Potential acts are required to put down what they plan to do in the talent show if they are selected.
Center Stage will have auditions for the applicants once all of the forms have been received and reviewed, UWF graduate assistant and program adviser Katlyn Whitty said.
"When all of the applications have been received, the Center Stage will choose 10 acts to come in and audition in front of a panel of judges," Whitty said.
"After the 10 acts have been chosen, the participants will come in for rehearsals held on Oct. 25 and 26 at 8:30 p.m. The UWF Talent Show will be held on Thursday Oct. 27 at 8:30 p.m. in the UWF Commons Auditorium," said Ann McKinney, associate director of University Commons and Student Activities.
"Of all of the events CAB puts on at UWF, the UWF Talent Show is one of the better ones held on campus," she added.
Joy M. Tompkins, program director of University Commons and student activities, said previous UWF talent shows have included a variety of performances including dancers and comedians.
"In the past 16 years, we have had people playing instruments, poetry readings, dancers, a person interpreting a song through the use of American Sign Language, comedians and a person doing an American Indian rain dance," Tompkins said.
Whitty said there has been a lot of effort in promoting the show.
"We started planning and advertising for the talent show the last weekend of September. and have been putting up posters and flyers and have information about it on the UWF Argus Web site," Whitty said.
Tompkins said safety precautions will be taken at the show.
"For safety reasons UWF will not allow acts of fire twirling at the talent show," Tompkins said.
Whitty said the talent show will be hosted by Jason LeVasseur, an award-winning small venue performer.
McKinney said the talent show usually attracts a big crowd.
"Between UWF students, faculty and staff, we are expecting between 300 and 400 people to be seated in the UWF Commons Auditorium," McKinney said.
Tickets are available at the service desk in the Commons. UWF students receive free admission, and the tickets $5.50 for nonstudents and $3.50 for senior citizens, military and students from other colleges.
