OnStar: The latest tracking anklet for Americans

Thanks to General Motors (GM) the United States Government has recently discovered a legal loophole to keep tabs on every American, regardless of privacy rights. Now local law enforcement officers, paramedics, and even possibly the highly-technological Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) will be able to help you jack-up a flat tire on the side of the road.

OnStar, the new global tracking system created when GM teamed up with Hughes Electronics Corporation and EDS, is the new "saving grace" for a large percentage of modern-day nuclear families looking for the perfect vehicle.

After advertisements from the company "stuck gold" with bits about kids insisting on the program for child safety, many Americans are demanding OnStar devices in their cars, skateboards, and hell, why not their wristwatches while we're at it-

Don't think I'm starting some kind of personal vendetta against OnStar; It's so much more than that! Being a semi-eccentric personality when it comes to governmental conspiracy, I am a firm believer that OnStar is one of the many attempts to invade the privacy of innocent citizens everywhere.

I really don't understand why people can't see through this whole thing? Don't you see- A transportation company, paid-off by one Mr. Mighty Dollar, has equipped modern automobiles with global tracking. It's great if you locked the keys in the car, but extremely bad if you're looking not to be found, even if it's just a holiday weekend getaway.

I consider this latest trend a progression of societal imprisonment. We might as well be walking our dogs wearing orange jumpsuits and ankle detectors relayed by satellite; that way, if we get lost, the US Navy can immediately send four helicopters, seven Hummers and 12 hover-crafts to our rescue. Thank God for OnStar!

Don't get me wrong; I definitely understand the immediate appeal of OnStar. After all, being able to call someone to unlock your doors from thousands of miles away is unquestionably impressive. But selling your soul to the devil, or the government, (same thing), is not the way we should go about receiving the safety technology we are undeniably entitled to.

We, as Americans, seem to be giving up our basic freedoms for the "idea" of personal security 24-7. The people who are buying into the protection of OnStar better not be surprised when the Constitution is pronounced dead, because they are the ones digging the grave for our heritage.

Countless soldiers have died protecting the "freedom to privacy" most of us used to cherish, but I guess that's just dust in the wind-

The idea that the only way to ensure the security of our vehicular wellbeing is to purchase a 2005 Pontiac Bonneville is completely ridiculous.

Personally, I'm going to stick with my trusty Ford Mustang that doesn't alert the FBI every time I leave the dorm-

I don't even know where to respond to this illogical rant. Maybe the fact that OnStar is a service exclusive to GM cars and if the government really wanted to spy on their citizens you think they would have chosen Ford or Toyota which more people drive? Maybe that it never occurred to the author that OnStar can be disconnected in your car if you don't want it there? Maybe if you wanted people to take you seriously, you could have at least proof read your article? Maybe I'll just say sometimes, when I read junk like this coming from UWF students that our own student newspaper publishes, it makes me a little embarrassed to tell people I go to this school. Oh my God! Can we talk about anything more useless?

We have people starving in America, soldiers dying overseas, civil liberties being trampled on left and right, tax dollars wasted at every turn, courts taking away constitutional rights of citizens without a trial, and God knows what else. (Continued…)
