Stay fit, have fun with intramurals

Registrations for intramural sports for the fall semester are coming to a close as the season has already started with sports from ultimate frisbee, golf and soccer, to floor hockey.
The intramural sports program is designed for people who want to play basketball, volleyball, bowling, racquetball, soccer tourney, flag football and other sports for recreation and exercise.
Intramural Sports Coordinator Matthew Ruckman said 3,600 students, faculty and staff are signed up this year.
"There are teams that are really good and there are teams that are really bad, but it doesn't matter because it's purely recreational," Ruckman said.
Teams are developed from Greek organizations, clubs, residents' halls, and various groups who just want to play for an extracurricular activity.
"I love to play sports but with my busy schedule all I really have time for is intramurals," said Amada Mullen, a women's volleyball captain. "It's not too competitive, but just enough to make it fun."
Any student, faculty or staff member can play regardless of experience.
Mullen said she looks for people who want to play for fun. "Most of my teammates have played before but it doesn't matter if they have or not," she said.
Soccer, softball and flag football games are played on the intramural field next to Martin Hall.
Any student who wants to be a referee for an intramural sport can be trained and hired by the Intramural Sports Department. Ruckman said they hire students for the intramural sports season and he may not see them again until next season.
For most sports, it doesn't cost anything to play. However, bowling is $5.50 per week at some bowling alleys, and golf is $30 for the season.
Ruckman said teams don't usually practice. "They just get out there and play," he said.
First place in each division will win trophies and t-shirts.
"We won our first game and that's a great way to start off the season," Mullen said.
