Less than 24 hours after a 3-0 loss to North Alabama, the University of West Florida rebounded from a two games to one deficit to defeat Alabama-Huntsville 3-2 (30-28, 19-30, 24-30, 30-20, 15-9) on Saturday. It was the second consecutive match West Florida has won in five games over Alabama-Huntsville in Spragins Hall. West Florida improves to 16-6, (6-3 in the Gulf South Conference). Alabama-Huntsville falls to 18-9, (6-3). West Florida holds the tiebreaker since the Argonauts won both matches (in five games) this season over Alabama-Huntsville.
The first game was close from beginning to end with 13 ties. With West Florida leading 26-25, two kills by Naiara Fernandes, and a kill by Jenny Lass gave the Argonauts game point at 29-26. After a West Florida service error and a kill by the Lady Chargers Emily Miller closed the lead to 29-28, Fernandes took a set from Melina Pereira and recorded the kill to give UWF a 30-28 game one win.
Unlike game one, Alabama-Huntsville led throughout game two. The Lady Chargers scored the first three points of the match and never looked back. UAH scored four consecutive points on three different occasions en route to the 30-19 triumph.
West Florida made game three closer, but Alabama-Huntsville prevailed. The Argonauts led early 9-7, but blocks by the Lady Chargers' Kim Beesley and Molly Healey gave Alabama-Huntsville a 13-12 lead that they would not relinquish. With the Lady Chargers leading 27-24, Healy recorded a kill and two services aces to lift Alabama-Huntsville to a 30-24 win.
Down two games to one, West Florida took control of game four. Fernandes's kill at 7-7 gave West Florida a lead they kept. After Alabama-Huntsville won three straight points to cut their deficit to 21-18, West Florida reeled off seven straight points to open a ten-point lead. Kills by Jessica Bragion and Kali Kalache helped seal the Argonauts 30-20 game four victory.
West Florida took their game four momentum into the deciding game five, scoring the first six points. Ironically, West Florida scored the last six points to defeat Alabama-Huntsville in game five earlier this season at the UWF Field House. Lass had four kills in the fifth game, and Fernandes posted a kill and a service ace for two of the final three points as West Florida earned the match victory.
Lass's 27 kills were a West Florida career high. In the process, she became the fourth Argonaut in history to total at least 300 kills in a season. She also led the Argonauts with 13 digs. Fernandes added 19 kills and 10 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Bragion collected 12 kills.
West Florida will be back in action on Tue., Oct. 18, at conference rival Valdosta State. The Argonauts defeated Valdosta State, 3-0, earlier this season on Sept. 20. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m. EST.
