The University of West Florida won a decisive road game Sunday with a shutout over Gulf South Conference rival the University of Alabama-Huntsville, 3-0. The win boosted UWF's chances for a berth in the GSC Tournament. The top four teams qualify for the postseason and the Argos were fifth going into Sunday's match with the fourth-place Chargers.
Austin Love scored his second goal of the season at the 5:57 mark on a shot from 35 yards out. West Florida held the 1-0 lead for most of the game. Mason Hupp's unassisted goal at 69:43 on a defensive rebound helped UWF pull away. The goal was Hupp's first of the season. Ryan Teague finished the scoring at 86:42 with a goal assisted by Jason Mroczkowski.
"We missed a few chances early, but we controlled the game from start to finish, " said UWF head coach Bill Elliott.
West Florida had a 20-10 advantage in shots. The Argonauts defense allowed only one shot-on-goal. UWF had ten shots-on-goal. Both teams had a pair of corner kicks. West Florida limited UAH leading scorer Jarad Peltier to just two shots, neither on goal.
"We played well on both sides today," added Elliott. "It was nice to finally put them away."
Chargers starting goalkeeper Joel Truitt had four saves. Backup keeper Geoffrey Merry allowed the last two goals in the games final 21 minutes.
West Florida improved to 6-5-1, (3-3 in the GSC). Alabama-Huntsville slips to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
17th ranked LMU defeats West Florida
The West Florida Argonauts made a strong bid this Friday afternoon at defeating the 17th-ranked Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial, but fell short, 3-1.
With the score tied at 1 at halftime, the Argonauts made a serious push in the second half by outshooting LMU, 14-6. UWF outshot LMU 18-17 for the game. Lincoln Memorial had one more shot-on-goal than UWF, 7-6.
"We had plenty of chances at the end. We just didn't take advantage of our opportunities like they did," said head coach Bill Elliott.
Lincoln Memorial scored the game winner at 59:15 on Leonardo de Barros' first of two goals. Barros scored on a pass from the right side, then scored again with 12 seconds left in regulation to seal the win.
"We played a great second half. We just were not sharp inside the 18-yard box," said Elliott.
In the first half, LMU scored first on a header by Vitor Souza at 14:06. The goal came off a corner kick by Claudio Rico. The Splitters tallied 10 corner kicks to UWFÂ¥s four. Keith Savage tied the game at the 44:12 mark on a Mason Hupp pass from the right corner. Savage took five shots in the game.
West Florida goalkeeper Matt Gascoigne and LMU's Brent Cole each had three saves. The game against LMU was the second time in a week the Argonauts faced a nationally ranked opponent. West Florida dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 10 Central Arkansas last Friday.
The Argos host William Carey College in a non-conference game Friday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 pm on Homecoming Weekend. They will host Delta State in their next conference match on Friday, Dec. 21 at 5:00 pm.
