Americans need an education

Freedom Whiting Contributing Writer You can hear the cable news pundits and the talking heads saying it all the time – “Americans are angry. They are frustrated.” As they should with unemployment hitting the double digits, the value of the dollar weakening, and Washington is getting about as much done as a spoiled, lazy Jersey Shore girl working in a T-shirt shop. 3 comments

Spring break offers fun, dangers

We’re mere moments away from that most blessed time in the academic year: spring break. A whole week with no classes so you can get caught up on last minute projects — or so you can totally check out of school and forget about responsibility for a while.

Captain America not Captain Conservative

Mike Greear News Editor Last month, Marvel Comics caught some flack from conservatives regarding their January issue of Captain America. The issue featured a scene in which a group of anti-tax protesters marched through the the streets in Boise, Idaho. 4 comments

Criticism of Obama unfounded

I hear people say: “Obama believes in Islam, Obama will destroy health care, Obama wants us to pay for illegal immigrants’ health care, Obama lies and Grandma dies, Obama wants to teach atheism to children, Obama was a terrorist.” Is it just me, or is criticism and hatred of our current president more prevalent than criticism of any previous president? Sure, people hated Clinton when the Monica Lewinsky affair hit the fan, and there were vocal critics of Bush’s Iraqi war campaign, but there seems to be a genuine hatred and mistrust for Obama like I’ve never seen or heard about before.

Tea Party shouldn’t be held responsible for the Austin plane bomber

Last Thursday, some guy who lost his retirement because he tried to exploit tax loopholes, got pissed off at the system and flew his plane into the IRS building in Austin, Texas. That night, I played a show at The Handlebar with my band, Big Science Action.

Stop running, America

I saw a bumper sticker the other day depicting the American flag and proudly proclaiming, “These colors don’t run.” Indeed, I’m a proud American who believes in the bravery of this country in the face of adversity. So why does it seem Americans are so afraid to prosecute so-called Islamic extremists in federal courts? When we proclaim that we have the best country in the world and that the U.

Deadlock — over a broken system

The University of West Florida administration and the United Faculty of Florida faculty union have been at impasse in negotiation for the 2008 contract for more than eight months. Ultimately, we feel certain that both groups are interested in providing the best learning environment for UWF students and the best teaching environment for our faculty.

Anonymous evals fill a need at UWF

University of West Florida

I thank the Voyager for giving us the opportunity to explain the collective bargaining impasse to students from the administration’s perspective. Students have a stake in how this conflict resolves. The key problem that prompted the administration to declare impasse is the use of written narratives from teaching evaluations in personnel decisions.

Faculty want only fairness

United Faculty of Florida

Contract negotiations between the University of West Florida administration and the faculty union reached an impasse in May of 2009. The main issue that has substantially delayed the ratification of a new contract revolves around a dispute over the inclusion of anonymous student comments in faculty performance evaluation files.

Doughnut throwdown gets sticky

Dunkin’ Donuts Mike Greear News Editor It’s no coincidence that ever since Dunkin’ Donuts opened its new Pensacola branch on Jan. 20 there have been lines of people wrapped around the building from open to close. This town has had a Dunkin’ Donuts deficiency for too long, and Krispy Kreme was simply not cutting the mustard.

Green Fund gets second try

Due to the hard work of students across Florida campuses, the Student Green Energy Fund will re-emerge in the state legislature this session after failing to pass through the Higher Education Appropriations committee last spring. The fund is a Florida state university system-wide campaign.

America wants to see more change

If a head football coach does not take his team to the championship in two years, rumblings abound for his termination. We will sit in the drive-thru for ten minutes at McDonald’s while the lobby is empty. Needless to say, we as Americans have become spoiled and impatient. 1 comment

This new fee is worth supporting

University of West Florida students have seen a veritable flood of fee increases and new fee proposals in the past few years. In an era when not just students, but parents, universities and every other individual and organization in the country is strapped for cash thanks to the global recession, it seems counterintuitive to think students should support another fee.

Still a racist in 2010? Really?

I work with an openly racist woman. She approached me about a month ago and asked me if I knew why a certain ex-employee was calling to talk to our boss. I told her I wasn’t sure, but it was probably because she wanted some part-time work. “I thought maybe she was trying to take my job,” she said. 4 comments
