According to recent studies, country music is the No.1 listened-to radio music genre this year, while classic rock stations are ranked 6th on the most listened to list.
Religious, oldies and talk radio stations are actually ranked more popular than classic rock.
Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with country music, but to have it be ranked No.1 in the nation is a little surprising. Now I am not saying that classic rock is the best music ever to exist but it is pretty damn close.
This sad but true fact makes me wonder what is wrong with this country. The classics are what make this country great.
I was raised on artists like Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Rolling Stones.
When I meet people that have never heard “Stairway to Heaven,” it makes me want to slap them.
When I asked a friend of mine who her favorite artist was, she looked at me in all seriousness and said “Lady Gaga.” I almost threw up. I will admit that she has some catchy songs, but would I want to listen to her when I’m not drinking? No.
I cannot even listen to the radio stations that play the new “hit songs” without laughing.
Most of the time I either don’t understand what they are saying because of all the synthesizers and curse words being edited out, or they really aren’t saying anything of importance.
At least country music has a point to the songs.
The artists sing about heartbreak, beer and horses. Some of that I can relate to when the mood strikes me, but how could I ever relate to Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA?” Sorry, I have never actually moved my hips like “yeah.” I didn’t even know that such an action was possible.
When I was listening to my favorite classic rock station last week, there was a contest to win tickets to the Journey concert. The disc jockey would name a song title and all the contestant had to do was name the artist. Sounds simple right?
Well, apparently this woman didn’t get the memo that Journey is a band, not a trip to China. The DJ gave her the song title “Sweet Home Alabama,” probably realizing that he is in Pensacola and this song meshes country with classic rock.
She answered “Queen.” I shut off the radio. People are so caught up in the status quo that they all have to wear Hollister and listen to the “hip” music, that no one takes the time to find music that they are really interested in.
There are so many choices, but people still torture themselves with Britney Spears. Music should be an expression of feelings, emotions, and in some cases, serious drug trips.
Making music should not be about fame or money, it should only be done with real passion. That is all music is to people today, a chance for their 15 minutes of glory.
No one really appreciates music’s true purpose anymore: to promote a sense of true happiness and pleasure.
Classic rock is “classic” for a reason. No matter how much hip-hop crap or crazy pop junk makes it to the radio, classic rock will never die.
New trends will happen and over time they will fade, but the classics will live on forever.
