I saw a bumper sticker the other day depicting the American flag and proudly proclaiming, “These colors don’t run.”
Indeed, I’m a proud American who believes in the bravery of this country in the face of adversity. So why does it seem Americans are so afraid to prosecute so-called Islamic extremists in federal courts?
When we proclaim that we have the best country in the world and that the U.S. Constitution is a testament to that, why are we hesitating to use it?
Let’s get something straight, people: These so-called Islamic extremists are not “masterminds.”
Manipulating someone’s core beliefs and then convincing them to strap a bomb to themselves or fly into a building is no more masterful than a pimp taking advantage of desperate women or Kevin Federline convincing Britney Spears that marrying him would be a good idea.
And should we really be afraid of some kid who is dumb enough to strap combustible materials next to his family jewels?!
Sorry, Dick Cheney. I’m more afraid of the teenagers from Brownsville who don’t have enough constructive activities to occupy their idle hands.
The Guantanamo Bay detention camp has been perceived internationally as a black eye for America and needs to be closed down. But then I hear rumblings from the right that they don’t want Islamic extremists on American soil. What are they afraid of?
Our maximum security prisons house some of the most notorious convicts in the world. Anyone who has seen MSNBC’s show “Lock Up” knows how crazy those guys are. There are criminals with swastikas tattooed between their eyes and inmates who smear their own feces on the looking glass of their cell door. And Republicans think we can’t hold some cowardly, punk Al-Qaida members?
Please. In the words of Dubya Bush, “Bring ‘em on.” Liz Cheney’s group, Keep America Safe, put out a documentary of several citizens of Standish, Mich., expressing fear of having Gitmo detainees held in a prison there. However, Michael Moran, Standish city manager, says that they’re an isolated minority that Cheney’s video elevates out of proportion in a way that’s “off base,” and he accuses her of fear-mongering. The detainee transfer would guard against “the loss of the 350 jobs provided by the [jail].”
So if we are to believe Fox News’ Sean Hannity when he says, “The U.S. is the greatest, best country God has ever given man on the face of the Earth,” then we should have no problem trusting in our court system in handling these Islamic extremists. It’s time for the red, white and blue to stop running.
