Are you in the mood for some great and inexpensive food? Bonsai is the place to go.

Located near University Mall at 8039 N. Davis Hwy, Bonsai Japanese Sushi Bar and Grill is just right for a night out.

The restaurant features a buy-one, get-one-free special on every item on the menu, except their box dinners, every day. The special includes all sushi rolls and hibachi dinners.

“Our food is great,” Antonio Chavez, manager of Bonsai, said. “Our prices are low, compared with other restaurants.”

Bonsai has a vast selection, too. They have over 50 sushi rolls to choose from. They offer raw rolls as well as cooked rolls.

“They had so many rolls to choose from,” said Jackie Pelfrey, a University of West Florida freshman majoring in radiology. “And the yum-yum sauce was awesome.”

The restaurant has a sushi bar where you can sit and watch as your food is prepared, or you can sit at a booth or table.

Bonsai is decorated with Japanese lanterns and various pieces of artwork. But the presentation of the food is artwork in itself.

“I thought the presentation of the food was very unique and traditionally Japanese,” Pelfrey said.

They serve their food on unusual plates. The plates are wooden and resemble a bridge, and the food is held between two gates, in an uncommon but clever way.

Bonsai is, however, having some trouble bringing in customers. They are situated in a building that has housed many different unsuccessful restaurants. They also have a sparse lunch crowd.

“The reason we aren’t busy for lunch is because people assume we are closed like so many of the other restaurants in the area,” Chavez said.

They need more UWF students to eat there. With the buy-one, get-one free deal going on, that shouldn’t be a problem.

“Come and try it,” Chavez said.
