Paintball

Special to the Voyager

Put down the controller. Turn off the Xbox 360 and take Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 back to the store.

There’s a first-person shooter where you can actually pull real triggers and break a real sweat.

It doesn’t take place in remote jungles or hot-zone cities in the Middle East. It’s here on campus.

It’s the University of West Florida paintball club. The club is in its second semester of operation at UWF.

It has really taken off as far as equipment, playing and fields are concerned. It recently received a grant from the Student Government Association for indoor play.

There are 10 official members and many other supporters of the club, paintball club president Joel Marks said. Membership is open to all UWF students, and dues are only $10 a semester plus discounted fees at other outside fields.

When not playing at outside fields, the club plays at the Pedagogy Gym at the Health, Leisure & Sports Facility.

Since it is indoors and no nets are used, the club, instead of regular paintballs, uses rubber polymer balls.

Joining the club, however, gives one a chance at the real deal. Members pay $3, but if you are not a member, play is still welcome at a mere $5 which includes a marker (gun), balls, mask and air for the tanks.

“We have everything,” Marks said. “That’s what makes our field great. Most people will go to a professional field and spend close to $60 on tank refills and extra paint.”

Another good thing is that the club only charges to sustain the events, and no profit is gained.

“It’s not about profit,” said Marks. “It’s just about people coming out and having a good time.”

The club plays every Saturday from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Membership is open to all UWF students, so all are invited to join or to just come and play.
