As the final whistle blew, tighthead prop Corbin McCall stood silent before joining his teammates to celebrate their 57-17 destruction of the University of Southern Mississippi.
For McCall, also the club treasurer, it has been quite a journey to reach this point.
“For me, the most amazing part of this season has been the evolution of the team as a whole,” McCall said. “This game was the culmination of everyone’s hard work, sacrifice and commitment, and I am so thrilled to have been a big part of it.”
With the win, the rugby club concluded its regular season undefeated for the first time in school history. The Argonauts started with a bang as rookie winger Chris Scott scored his first career try, worth 5 points, within the first minute. Veteran back Kristopher Stadler scored soon after and the rout was on as the Argonauts piled on 38 first-half points to seize control of the match.
“The best part of a game like this is the valuable experience gained by all of our rookies in the second half because of the large lead,” said club president and team captain Michael Parlato. “I am so thrilled that everyone got to contribute to this victory.”
Argonauts Eric Lane, Dale Russell and Stalder each scored two trys apiece to lead the way. Robert Brigham, Miles Bertling and Chris Scott all finished with a try, and Parlato chipped in 12 points on 6/9 conversion kicks to round out the scoring.
“Honestly, we scored so often and so quickly that I lost track,” said Russell, a two-year veteran. “This game was the most fun I’ve had all season.”
Having concluded their regular season, the Argos now set their sights on a new goal: winning the 2010 Deep South Conference Championships. Parlato is adamant in focusing on the task at hand.
“The only thing on our minds right now is the March 13 game against Tulane University,” he said, “and I will do everything in my power to guarantee that the club is ready.”
The game against Tulane will be played at home.
