UWF dominates Miles in doubleheader

Senior pitcher Jillian Lafrance improved to 9-2 with in the Argos’ 15-1 win over the Golden Bears.

The University of West Florida downed region opponent Miles College in two five-inning contests, winning the first, 15-1, and defeating the Golden Bears, 8-0, in the second game.

Jillian Lafrance improved to 9-2 with the first game win, while Crystal Thompson secured her first Argo win in the second game.

Karri Bisbee was stellar from the plate, going 8-for-9 on the day. The Argonauts used the strength of 19 hits to cruise to a victory in the first game with the Golden Bears.

Lafrance struck out 10 in the affair, and was even more impressive from the plate with seven RBI in a 2-for-3 outing. Shannon Miles was hot on Lafrance’s heels, driving in five runs of her own.

Karri Bisbee and Stephanie Ryan each turned in 4-for-5 performances. Bisbee and Ryan opened the game with back-to-back singles in the first, scoring on a three-run shot from Miles to left center.

The top of the lineup then teamed up again, as Bisbee, Ryan, and Ingram hit three consecutive singles, followed by Miles who continued the streak with a single that scored Bisbee from third. Lafrance then cleared the bases with a double down the left field line for a 7-0 lead.

UWF continued with hot bats in the top of the third, with Bisbee and Ryan leading off with singles for the third consecutive inning.

Ingram drew a walk to load the bases for Miles, who answered with an RBI single to right. Lafrance then cranked a grand slam to right center for a 12-0 lead that would last until the 5th.

A three-spot in the fifth for the Argos increased the lead to 15-0, as Kaley Kania, Bisbee, and Ingram all collected RBI.

The Golden Bears plated one run in the bottom of the fifth inning, after a leadoff double. A sacrifice fly scored the lone run, but Lafrance struck out the final two batters for the 15-1 victory.

The senior allowed just three hits in the affair, and improved to 9-2 with the win. Sophomore Thompson earned her first UWF start in the circle in game two of the doubleheader in a shutout victory.

Thompson punched out six batters in her first appearance as an Argo, allowing only four hits.

The team blasted 13 hits as Bisbee was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, while Ingram and Melissa Chastang each went 2-for-3. Scoring was quiet for both sides in the first, but UWF plated one in the second as Ryan crossed on a sacrifice fly from Danielle Kildow.

Bisbee then dropped a bunt single to lead off the third and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt from Chastang.

A standup double down the left field line from Ingram scored Bisbee, followed by Ryan’s base hit that plated Ingram. Kildow again came through later in the inning with a single that scored Miles for a 4-0 lead.

UWF was unrelenting in the final two innings, tacking on two in the fourth. Bisbee scampered home on a passed ball, while Ryan collected the RBI on a hit that pushed Ingram across.

During the fifth, UWF sealed the win when Thompson ignited the offense with a double down the left field line. Franny Bell picked up her first hit of the season, and Bisbee followed suit to load the bases.

Chastang answered the call, driving in the final two with a double to left center.
